A short-term roadmap is being put in place by the Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu to up the railway's revenue to 2 lakh crores in a coming couple of years, reported a leading business daily on Monday.

The Indian Railways currently has an annual earning of Rs 1.7 lakh crore.

Reportedly, a top official of the Indian Railways has said that they have already chopped freight rates in a bid to increase market shares.

“With our new and improved passenger train services, we could gradually be preferred mode for India's rising middle class for short and medium distances of travel with our new and improved passenger train services,” the official also stated.

The official further revealed that the Railways will unveil more super premium trains on high traction routes and as the demand for the third AC class is on the rise, it also plans to increase the number of air-conditioned coaches on existing trains.
