The electricity generation in India expanded 3.9% to 103.23 bln kWh in April when compared to same period the previous year. The electricity generation was up by 5.8% YoY for the month of March. Thermal power generation grew 1.7% YoY to 89.61 billion kWh in March. Thermal power accounts for over 80% of India's total capacity. 

Hydel power generation increased 30.95 to 10.23 billion kWh. Nuclear power generation, bucking the trend, contracted 3.1% YoY to 3.18 billion kWh. The GoI has aimed to produce 1,229.40 billion kWh of power in 2017-18 (Apr-Mar. It should be noted here that electricity is the single-largest component of the Index of Industrial Production with a weight of 10.3%
