Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Indian automaker and its Korean unit SsangYong Mitor Co., are planning to jointly manufacture electric sport-utility vehicles (SUV) by 2020, according to a leading national news daily. SsangYong's spokesperson confirmed that the company is finalising the product and expects to have a vehicle ready by 2020.

The electric car initiative by M&M and SsangYong comes at a time when automakers globally are focusing on reducing emissions via cleaner fuel technologies. As of now M&M manufactures electric cars in India which includes small car e20 and a sedan eVerito. M&M also manufactures two-wheelers in the United States.

The sales of the electric cars are facing a hurdle, as the charging facilities do not exist for the cars, even though India offers subsidies for clean-fuel cars.
